#061 - Headless Symmetry
Notsuke, Japan - 2017
While photographing the Sika deer on the Notsuke Peninsula in Hokkaido, Japan, I was overwhelmed by the stunning beauty of the landscape. The flat fields, blanketed in pristine white snow, combined with the graceful presence of the deer, created a scene of perfect harmony.
As a bit of a symmetry nerd, I was delighted to see this balance through my viewfinder. Initially, I tip-toed, trying to capture the deer's head in the frame but found it challenging to fit everything in. Then, it struck me that by bending down, I could omit the head entirely, focusing on the deer's elegant antlers and the serene landscape. This unexpected perspective resulted in an image that I personally preferred, highlighting the beauty of the moment in a way that felt more profound and artistic.
This is an award-winning piece of artwork.
